I wish to invite all you to pray for the beloved people of Burundi which is living through a delicate moment: May the Lord help all people to flee the violence and to act responsibly for the good of the nation.
— Pope Francis, 5-17-2015
SNAPSHOT: In April, Burundi President Nkurunziza, in power since 2005, announced he would seek a third term. Critics say he must step down after two terms, per the constitution. Burundi’s Constitutional Court, however, ruled that Nkurunziza’s first term does not count because he was elected by parliament and not by voters. After a failed coup on May 14, Nkurunziza dismissed his defense and foreign ministers. Originally scheduled for May 26, the parliamentary elections have been delayed until June 5. According to The World Bank, Burundi is the second poorest country in the world, after Malawi.
