Saints of the Day:  Charles Lwanga and Companions

22 Ugandan martyrs, died between 1885 and 1887
Joseph Mukasa was beheaded in 1885 and Charles Lwanga was burned to death in 1886 for refusing and protecting other young pages in King Mwanga’s court from his immoral sexual practices

After burning Charles’ feet, the executioners promised to free him if he recanted his faith. Charles replied

You are burning me, but it is as if you are pouring water over my body.

His last word was Kotanda! (My God!)

June 3, Martyrs Day, is a national holiday in Uganda.
