Mother Teresa’s 1959 retreat – 2

Second Day
Under the patronage of my Guardian Angel

Aim: To acquire the sentiments which are necessary for a perfect Act of Contrition

  1. Do I realize that sin is a possibility for me and that I must always be on my guard?
  2. Which are the dangerous occasions of mortal sin to which I am exposed?
  3. I must find out the habits and inclinations, which if left unchecked, will lead me to grievous sin. Do I try to overcome semi-deliberate venial sins?
  4. My rules are given to me by God to keep me from all dangers. Do I neglect any of them habitually? What remedies should I take to improve matters?

Readings: Book of Psalms 11

The Imitation of Christ: Book I, Chapters 21 & 25; Book 3, Chapter 52

Reflection of the Day: What have I done for Christ? What am I doing for Christ? What should I do for Christ?

Prayer: Cardinal John Henry Newman’s Lead, Kindly Light, written at sea, June 16, 1833

LEAD, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom
Lead Thou me on!

The night is dark, and I am far from home—
Lead Thou me on!

Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene—
one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor pray’d that Thou
Shouldst lead me on.

I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead Thou me on!

I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on,

O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;

And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
