Do you read good books? Books that change your life?
Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. — Saint Paul, Romans 12:2
Ten years ago, maybe more, I’ve lost track of time, my reading tastes changed all of the sudden. It was well out of my control (unless you factor in man’s ability to resist), and hence, I refer to this change as An Act of God in my life. You see, I was quite happy reading Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, well, at least until she messed up and lost control of the characters and the plot. And no doubt, I still enjoy Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Chronicles of Narnia — I don’t see that ever changing.
But what I mean is that I suddenly developed a taste for spiritual reading. The change was clear at the time, and I wondered how long it would last (like two books worth? a few months?). It was and still is great fun to wander into a bookstore and browse and discover what pulls my mind and heart, and in what direction. Years later, I can say the shift in trajectory was not temporary, and upon surrendering to it, my path is forever changed. And so I share my Read Good Books list with you. Perhaps you, too, will be drawn in, and find yourself pointed in a new direction.
While I’ve been able to categorize the books somewhat, I regret that I am not able to provide the sequence in which I read them. A few listed are recent purchases that wait for me in the To Read Soon pile. Another note: Many of the books I’ve listed are meant to be tasted, savored, and digested, rather than gobbled up in a rush and forgotten.
