To walk together

Praying With Pope Francis – January 2017

Monthly prayer intention: For Christian unity

That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.

Urgent prayer intention: For homeless people affected by the cold

That in these days of such great cold that we think of all the people living on the streets, affected by the cold and by the indifference of others. We pray for them and ask the Lord to warm the hearts of others to help them.

To be coworkers in truth

Feast of Saint Josaphat, Apostle of Unity
One Spirit, One Faith

Saint Josaphat (c. 1580–1623) worked to unite the Eastern and Western branches of the Church. For his efforts he was hacked to death by an angry Orthodox mob on November 12, 1623. His murderers repented and became Catholics. Through his intercession may those who foment disorder, destruction, and violence in society come to know the peace of God and become coworkers in truth.

Collect for Mass

Stir up in your Church, we pray, O Lord,
the Spirit that filled Saint Josaphat
as he laid down his life for the sheep,
so that through his intercession
we, too, may be strengthened by the same Spirit
and not be afraid to lay down our life for others.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Psalm of the Day: 133, a benediction over a peaceful community

A song of ascents. Of David.
How good and how pleasant it is,
when brothers dwell in unity!

Like fine oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
Upon the beard of Aaron,
upon the collar of his robe.

Like dew of Hermon coming down
upon the mountains of Zion.
There the LORD has decreed a blessing,
life for evermore!

Scripture of the Day: Third Letter of Saint John 5–8

Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers and sisters,
especially for strangers;
they have testified to your love before the Church.
Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their journey.
For they have set out for the sake of the Name
and are accepting nothing from the pagans.
Therefore, we ought to support such persons,
so that we may be co-workers in the truth.

Question of the Day

My children, what are you doing? — Saint Josaphat to the angry mob attacking him

Lead us to a unity of love

Prayer of the Day
Saint Dionysius the Syrian’s Prayer to End Discord

God the Father,
origin of Divinity,
good beyond all good,
and fair beyond all fair,
You are the abode
of calmness, peace, and concord.

Put an end to the discord
that separates us from one another,
and lead us back to a unity of love
that may show some similarity
to Your Divine Nature.

As You are above all things,
unite us by the unanimity of a good mind,
so that through the embrace of love
and the bonds of affection
we may become spiritually one —
both in ourselves and in each other —
by means of Your peace
that renders all things peaceful.
